Tom and Cecilia

Tom and Cecilia are twins and are one year, eight months old. These babies were left by their mother in someone's house on 3rd December where she claimed to have gone to the nearby shop to buy something and she didnt turn up. The case was reported to the police and the children were later taken to the hospital since they were suffering from severe malnutrition. According to the records, the mother was found and she is a single orphan girl. She has been interviewed by the children's officer who recommended that they be placed at HLCH for 6 months so that the mother can be monitored to see if she is in a position to raise them. After 6 months, the children can be reunited with her or the children's office will advice accordingly.

Meshack
Meshack was born on 15th July 2011 and the mother later absconded leaving the baby behind at the new born unit where he was undergoing treatment. The child has been placed at HLCH since no one has ever come to claim him.

Joshua is 5 1/2 years; in pre-unit class. This day, it was all smiles for Joshua having been blessed with a new mama and it was time to leave. It was very easy for him to bond with the new mother and since the first day, he was very excited. We are happy for him but we already miss him a lot.

Ephie (Papa) and his parents - They really look alike!

When Ephie's adoptive parents came to identify their child, they wanted a boy between 6 months and one year old. We had informed the adoption agency that the boy we had of that age did not have one document which would take one or two months. After negotiating with the adoption agency, they requested if we would show them a 1 1/2 years old child although they were not sure since they wanted a child less than one year old. When I took them to see Ephie, and I told them his name, they laughed a lot and I thought, what could be the problem? I tried to ask them but they could not stop laughing. Ephie is not a common name in Kenya and so I thought, may be they find the name funny. When they later came to the office they told me that the reason why they were laughing so is because they had decided that their adoptive son will be called Ephie, the short form of Ephraim and they were amazed! Isn't God amazing? they said. So our son has been here all along.

Erikah is about 4 years old and Angeline 2 years old.

Kevin gets a new family

Kevin was admitted at HLCH on 11/07/06. He is 6years old, and has been going to Mt. View school in class one. This was a great day for Kevin; his time to leave HLCH and join his new family of Mr. and Mrs Joseph Mboloi and her older sister Mercy. His adoptive parents have been coming to bond with him but they had to wait for Kevin to close the school. Days were very long for Kevin as he waited for this day but it has finally come, and he could not hide the joy. His new name be Kevin Mutuku.

Sheila was born on 29^th September 2011 and abandoned on 7^th October 2011 at Kiambu district hospital. She was admitted at the nursery and stayed there for about three weeks. Abraham was abandoned at Karuri in Kiambu where he had been left to an old man by the mother. The child was then taken to Kiambu district hospital for medication. They were therefore admitted at HLCH from Kiambu district hospital.

Tando was born on 21^st June 2010 with a low birth weight of 1700 grams. They were born twins (both of them boys) and the mother left with one son leaving Tando at Kenyatta national hospital. Davina was found admitted at Happylife on 27th August 2010. On admission, she was about 5 months old and very withdrawn from everyone including the children. She used to cry a lot but with time she started interacting with the other children and became a cheerful girl. Davina now has a new Mum; Leah Mucheke who is a single a single lady from Naivasha. It was a great day for Davina's mum as she shared a cake with the other children as a way of welcoming Davina home. Wish you God's blessings!

One New admission - Baby Dhamana

We have a new baby boy 'Dhamana' who was admitted at HLCH on 26th September 2011; his name means means 'a treasure' and he is a real miracle. He had been abandoned on 1st August at Zimmerman, Kasarani, where he had been put in a plastic bag with a wet blanket and then thrown in bushy deserted pit latrine. The good samaritan known as Catherine together with other women were going to the market when they had him cry and rescued him. According to her, Dhamana was very small and his body was turning blue. She took him and reported the matter to the nearby chief, then took him to the hospital. Cathrine stayed with the child about 3 weeks. Immediately after admission at HLCH, we took him to the hospital since he had a congested chest; was treated and is still going through medication. He is about one month old. Pray with us for Dhamana to recover and live to see the goodness of the Lord.

Aiden gets a new family

Aiden was born in a hotel in Nairobi on 08/09/10 and taken to Kenyatta Hospital because of respiratory distress. The baby was accompanied to the hospital by a hotel attendant who declined to give the name of the hotel, and a man who was believed to be the baby’s father although he later denied to be the child’s biological father. Aiden was admitted at HLCH from Kenyatta National hospital on 3^rd December 2010. Now Aiden has a new family Morten & Dorte Nysted from Denmark. Baby Angel goes for Adoption

Angel was admitted at HLCH on 19^th July 2010 when she was about 10 months old. On admission at HLCH, Angel was very withdrawn and was not confident with any adult although she was in good health. However, she changed with time and she is now a very cheerful and pretty girl. Now Angel has new lovely parents Ann and Joseph Karimi who are pastors in one of the Kenyan churches. She is truly an angel and will surely bring much more blessings and joy in this family. Baraka!!

If you new Moses, I know you will be confused whether he has turned back to be a young baby but this is Timothy; aha!! looks almost like Moses! Timothy has a new mama and Dad; Beatrice and Josef Alexandrasson from Sweeden. He was admitted at HLCH on 3^rd September 2010. Timothy is a very happy boy, smiles all the time and a darling to all the caregivers. I remember one time he was quite sick and admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital everyone was seriously praying for him and wanted to go and stay with him at the hospital. At times I wonder; what would happen if those who abandon these children would get a chance to see who they become in the future and how they are loved especially here at Happylife and then by their adoptive parents; that may never happen. As for Timothy, the condition he had been abandoned in was for him to die but God had a better plan and He sent a Good Samaritan to rescue him, and today He has blessed him with loving parents. Today the 3rd of September 2011, Jordan leaves Happylife to live with his adoptive parents Annika and Jeppe Ekstrom; from Denmark. His new name is Jonathan Jordan "Jojo", and I love it!!! Baraka to Jordan and his new family and as his name means ( Jonathan - God's gift), we pray that he will bring immeasurable joy to the whole family.

Larry goes for adoption

Larry was abandoned on 9^th May 2010 outside a certain residential gate at Kasarani. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan who reported the case to Kasarani police station. There was a small bag beside him with some clothes and the birth notification which showed that he had been born at Ruiru sub-district hospital on 26^th April 2010. Larry has been blessed with his adoptive parents Teresa and Peter Gakumo who took him home on the 29^th August 2011. God bless Larry and his new family.

Baby Nicko taken for adoption

Thanks be to God!!! Nicko has a new family. Nicko was abandoned on 27^th July 2010 at Roysambu round about by unknown persons and rescued by officers from Kasarani police station. He was one day old and weighed 2.2 kgs. He was admitted at HLCH on the same day. Nicko was one of the children who was very sick with rotavirus outbreak last year and recovered. Now Nicko has a dad, a mum and a 4 year old sister. What a joy! God bless Nicko and his family. His new name is Petros.

Emporia Kansas Meets Happy Life!

A group of 14 students, faculty and staff from Emporia State University, and residents of the city of Emporia, went to Happy Life Children's Home in mid-May. We stayed at the Home for two-three weeks; helping to feed babies, playing with the children, carrying wet laundry up the stairs to the roof, carrying the dry laundry down and making ourselves as useful as possible.

Some of the group went out to the new property at Juja to help build the chicken coop. We worked hard and did our best as left with it almost finished. Many in our group expressed their admiration and respect for the "Mothers" and other staff members who work so hard to keep the children clothed, fed, loved and cared for.

We were impressed with the number of Kenyans who came by regularly to volunteer at the Home. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to spend time with the staff and children at Happy Life.

Sifa and her new adoptive mum

Sifa has gone through so much health wise. She was found abandoned near a stream at Githurai 45. At one time he was admitted at the hospital for a month but we thank God that she is much better now. God will never stop to amaze us!! Aaron's story

Just a few weeks ago, I wrote about baby Aaron who had a kidney problem. The doctors were asking a lot of money for him to be operated and remove one of his kidneys they said had failed. We have been trying to get a cheaper hospital for that but this is not necessary. Wow!! Writing this makes me even more excited!!! Our God will never stop to amaze us; and this week He did it again! God cares for these children even to the fine details that we may not think about. Aaron is getting a new family: a dad, mum, a sister and a brother!!! The amazing thing is Aaron’s adoptive father is a medical person, working in organ’s transplant and especially kidneys. It seems like it can be true in the movies, but this is for real; it is God’s destiny. The first time they saw Aaron’s story on the blog made them think and want to know more about this boy. This is even more exciting!!, when the adoptive dad saw his medical reports, he told us that, according to his observation, the boy may not need the operation, although he is still consulting with other doctors. The adoptive dad is Kenyan and the mother is from Finland. Wow… Glory to God!!!

Steve gets a new family

Steve was found abandoned at Githurai on the evening of 24th December 2009. The Good Samaritan took him to her home. She then reported the case to the area chief and the area police station who advised her to stay with the child to see if anyone will claim the child. He was admitted at Hlch 8th March 2009. Steve is about 3 years old. God has blessed him with a new Mum and a older sister and this has made him very happy and excited. His new names are Steve Kuria.

Today we have two new admissions of baby Seth - 2 months old and Chiara who is about 10 months old. Seth was born pre-term with a birth weight of 2.5 kgs. His mother later abandoned him at the hospital a week later. Chiara was abandoned outside the gate of a residential house. She is a very happy girl and enjoys playing with the other children at HLCH.

A sad time for Happy Life Family

Serving these children is so fulfilling. When we see children who come weak, sick, unhappy growing up to be healthy and happy children gives us a lot of joy. However, we also go through great challenges when some of these children die having served then with all diligence. This week baby Christian passed on at Kenyatta hospital where he had been admitted for 5 days. This boy was the youngest then 3 1/2 months old and everyone loved him so much. When such a thing happen, our hearts are full of pain, and very discouraged. Christian was one of those healthy babies and all of a sudden he gets sick and in 5 days, he is gone. pray for us that the Lord of all comfort will see us through this.

Carol goes back to the family that rescued her

Carol was abandoned when she was about 4 months old outside a residential house one early morning. The owners of the house rescued her and reported the case to the police. They were told to stay with the child as the police try to investigate on the parents whereabouts but after a 3 months, they had not yet found the parents. They were then told to bring the child at Happy Life children's home although they really wanted to keep her. It has been hard for the adoption agency to decide on who was to adopt carol since several parents had applied to adopt her but they concluded that the family that rescued her and stayed with her for three months was the one to adopt her since they had bonded quite well and even for the time she was at Happylife, the adoptive mother used to visit her very often.

Prayers for Baby Aaron

Aaron is one year and one month old. He was admitted at Happy life when he was just one one week old. He was given his named Aaron by Miriam – a young volunteer from Switzerland who stayed with us for 3 months – saying he will name him Aaron as in the bible, Aaron was Miriam’s sister. Aaron is a very happy boy. He started developing some chest congestions last year and we took him to the hospital on several occasions and he would get treated but we thought that he would be asthmatic. Since then we have consulted several doctors, and most of them have had different opinions on what is supposed to be done to Aaron. We have done several tests of which some of them are quite expensive and different doctors have come up with different opinions, some advising for an operation some opposing it. The last report we got from a specialist who did some tests on him said that one of his kidneys has completely failed and needs to be removed. They could not identify what could have caused this since the kidney is not blocked. He has not given us a date on when this should be done but whatever the case; we all should pray for this dear boy that all will be well with him. The amazing thing is, he looks very healthy, he is growing normally and he has not had the chest congestion for a long time now. God is in control.

'Outing'

Today was the children vaccination day against measles for the children below five years. We decided to first take those who are between 2 -5 years old in a nearby clinic but they all thought they were going out for a walk. They all got new saddles which were quite annoying with this funny noise but this made them very excited for the outing. They could not even pause for a picture but little did they know that their outing was to go and get the measles shots in a nearby clinic. Their faces when going out and when they came in communicated it all. After the shots, they would pause for a picture but with these dull faces. Pole sana.

Children between 3-7 years.

Many of the children are adopted when they are 3 years and below. However, some are adopted when they are older than that but just a few. We hope that these children will get adopted into families. However, our vision is to have family units’ set-up where these children can be divided and be brought together in different families as they await adoption and if they will not be adopted, Happy Life is already their home. Today, Baby Alvin got a home after having been abandoned on 13th April 2011. Alvin had been left by his mother to a very young school girl. The alleged mother lied to the girl that she was rushing to get something nearby and asked her to stay with the baby for a few minutes. Since then, the mother has never been traced. Alvin is about 6 months old and is healthy.

Mayana was born in July 2010. She was abandoned at Kenyatta national hospital on 1^st January 2011. The baby had been admitted at the hospital suffering from pneumonia and malnutrition. According to the admission records, the mother is a window, 25years old and has two other children.

Tando was born as a twin (2 boys) on 21^st June 2010 at Kenyatta Hospital. The mother left with the first twin living him behind. He had a low birth weight of 1700 grams. Tando is now in good health and weighs 6.7 kgs. One would wonder how a mother would abandon one child who is a twin and leave the other.

Isnt she lovely! Joy does not remember her initial name since her new name is Mary Wambui but she is the same lovely and joyous girl who will bring a smile to everyone around her. Her adoptive Mum is very happy and lacks word to describe the joy she has in getting this precious daughter; she says, "everyone loves her."

What is Happening? - Privelege

Happy Life Children's Home has been a home for abandoned children for the last nine years. Right now we have a capacity of 50 children. Most of the children are admitted here when they are very young (below two months old) owing to the fact that most of the babies are abandoned immediately after birth. Some actually are admitted the very same day they are born. I don't understand what is happening, because late we have been admitting children who are abandoned when they are older; around 1- 3 years old; this is shocking! May be its because of the high poverty levels but this may not fully justify it. The previous week, we admitted baby Privelege but we call him "Prive" - about 2- 2 1/2 years old. This is not the first case but we have seen this trend in the recent past and we can only wonder. Privelege, is very happy to have sisters, brothers and loving mums. I think even before he was physically abandoned, he had already been emotionally abandoned and that has made him very comfortable and happy being at Happylife. Our mission continues "WE give Hope to the abandoned babies."

It is not difficult to envision the conditions that these unborn babies and those babies recently born must endure. Many of the babies who come to Happy Life have a variety of conditions that have affected their health: skin problems; malnutrition; upper respiratory problems; malaria; birth defects....... 22 babies have died since our beginnings in 2002.

Sifa and Timothy have been in a local hospital for several weeks and are making good progress. They both have a virus called "Lota Virus" that has been prevalent in the area. Please pray that Sifa and Timothy quickly recover!

Sifa was found abandoned near a stream at Githurai 45 by a Good Samaritan named Alice. She stayed with the baby for several days since she did not know what she was supposed to do. She later reported the case was at Kia-mumbi police station, who referred her to Kasarani Children’s office. The child was about 7 weeks old on admission at HLCH. She is healthy and doing well.

Timothy was found abandoned at Githurai 45on 3rd September 2010, having been put in a plastic bag. Timothy was about 1 ½ months- 2 months old. The case was reported at Kasarani police station by a Good Samaritan named Rose. On the same day, he was admitted at HLCH and he is a healthy boy who is growing very well.

Tahila was abandoned at Githurai in a bush immediately after birth on 14^th January 2010. She was rescued by a Good Samaritan who reported the matter to the district children’s officer the following day and admitted at HLCH on the same day. Tahila is 3.8 kgs.

Zac

Zac was born on 25^th December 2010 at Thika District hospital. His mother later gave him up for adoption the same day through the child welfare adoption society of Kenya.

Habima

Habima was born pre-term on 20^th October 2010 at Thika District Hospital with a birth weight of 1.7 kgs. He was later abandoned by the mother on 3^rd November and has been at the hospital for 1 ½ months. He was admitted at HLCH on 21^st January since he has gained some weight to 2 kgs.

Please pray for all the babies and especially baby Tahila who has some health issues and Habima who is still tiny and needs a lot of attention to gain more weight.

A new baby - Jawabu ( which means, 'Answer')

Jawabu was born at Kenyatta National Hospital on 12th June 2010. The mother later abandoned him and since then he has been there until 6th January 2011, when he was admitted at HLCH.
