Teamwork; The Good Out of COVID

Our normal lifestyles as we previously knew changed with the onset of COVID-19 and this, universally. Different people adapt differently and while human beings are not so welcoming to change, it is sometimes necessary. The positivity we have seen with the children at our Juja Farm campus is remarkable.

Schools in Kenya were closed late March and this meant studying from home. The young ones understand the importance of education and how phenomenal it is to their future. They have been studying on their own and even helping each other with tough topics in the subjects they cover. They hold study discussions on weekdays so as to ensure they still remember what they have been taught in school.

Aside from that, they are very helpful with house chores in their specific houses. They help their mothers to clean the rooms, do and fold laundry and simply ensuring that their houses are clean and orderly. They have also been going through cooking classes because who doesn’t want to learn making a delicious meal, right?

The older ones have been useful with outdoor work activities such as farming, offloading the delivery vehicles and even planting and watering trees. The children appreciate the environment and do their best to help take care of it and ensure its conducive for their stay.

With so much time on their hands, the girls have also been teaching themselves to plait each other’s hair which is definitely a fun sport for them. In the evening, they have daily exercises which help them keep fit.

Generally, the children are lucky to have each other’s company and the older ones help out the younger ones with tasks. This is such a good way for them to bond with each other. Their love for each other is so evident and such an encouragement in the face of such tough times.

No More Volunteers!

This season has been one of the most unexpected and unpredictable ones yet also one that has surprisingly brought the world together in one way or another.

Normally, we would have so many volunteers popping in every so often to help out with work around the home. Things were way easier then thanks to the extra set of hands. You never miss the water till the well runs dry and ours surely did. Having volunteers really helped a great deal with both taking care of the children and balancing this with daily chores; laundry, dishes and cleaning the rooms.

Basic activities yet vital. With the onset of COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya and all over the world, a lot of things have had to change. Basically, our lifestyles had to change!

To us, this meant completely banning visitations and interactions with the children. Obviously no volunteers as well. Inevitably, this had our mothers and caregivers a bit more overwhelmed with work than before as they needed to fill the gap left thereof.

With time, however, we have managed to add more staff so as to lessen the burden and ensure nobody gets burn out as we also ensure the caregivers are healthy enough to take care of the lovely children.

We also greatly appreciate the resilience and strength of the staff as they love and nurture the young ones. They have shown so much dedication and flexibility with the unpredictable nature of this season and this has helped keep us all afloat. We will always celebrate them for this.

We are really grateful to all friends of Happy Life that have made it easier to face each day during this season. Their endless support goes a long way to keeping us afloat and we do no take their sacrifice for granted.

Just recently, we had a special visit from Cecilia Mwangi Foundation. The founder, Cecilia Mwangi, celebrated her birthday by extending her generosity to the home.
This gesture of love overwhelmed us and even though we cannot have visitors play with the children, they still have ways to make us smile.

Once more, we say thank you!
